Over the past few years I've been fairly vocal (though usually not on this site) in criticising the SSIS team for their overall lack of feedback to SSIS items submitted through Connect - that's not an easy thing to do either given that I've gotten to know some of the team in reality rather than virtually. Well, if I'm going to be negatively critical then its only fair to give them credit where credit is due as well.
A couple of weeks ago I posted a request for new functionality that went something like this:
The OLE DB Source Editor allows us to use a SQL query that is stored in a variable by setting Data Access Mode = 'SQL Command from variable'. The problem with this is that it is not possible to see the SQL query without coming out of the OLE DB Source Editor.
You should display the SQL statement somewhere in the OLE DB Source Editor. There's a big piece of real-estate just under the combo where we select the variable - just display it in there.
In my opinion this would have been a relatively easy fix to make and would add great value to the SSIS developer. Originally this was set to "Won't fix" which dismayed me. And I told them so. Today there was another update to the issue from SSIS Program manager Deniz Erkan:
Thanks to those who commented on this. We were actually going through a hard triage meeting looking at hundreds of DCRs and at first rejected this item as we thought it didn't fit into our priorities in Katmai.
We thought about it again, and the good news is that we decided to take this in Katmai. I actually changed the state of this bug to be approved.
Thanks again for being patient and persistent with us.
That's great news. They listened to the feedback from the user community and have acted upon it - that's all that we can ask for. Thanks guys!
Oh and by the way, don't assume that my submissions are getting preferential treatment just because of any working relationships that I've developed with the team. I've had a multitude of submissions rejected this week as a result of these triage meetings, there's not many that have gotten through. Trust me.
