Ward Ralston
writes "in November 2005, we told customers and partners about Windows Server's transition to 64-bit. We told everyone what we were going to do, here's an excerpt:"
Installing MSDE on SBS for Blackberry Enterprise Server... PDQ
Chris Dalby
writes "I’ve got a few customers using Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES) now and they are all running this on Small Business Server 2003.
Installing BES onto SBS is not entirely straight forward, mainly down to the way MSDE is installed on SBS. The BES installation cannot find the MSDE database, but it also doesn’t give you the option to automatically install another database instance. So, in order to get the BES installation working on SBS, you should create a new instance of MSDE before ruining the installation. You can do this as follows:"

When to use Office Live and SBS 2003 R2
James Senior
writes " Office Live is good on it's own, as is SBS 2003 R2. When to offer a customer either of these products will depend on their needs and circumstances as will be the choice to use both in harmony. To find out how to identify which product suits check out this brand new resource on the Partner portal:"
Set Excel settings to avoid SharePoint permissions errors
SharePoint Blogs
writes "Excel Services Settings Excel services have to be setup properly in SharePoint Central Administration before they are used in SharePoint. New users often forget to set these settings in central administration and they get permissions errors when they try to publish a report in SharePoint or try to access an Excel sheet. For example, one of the errors users get is: You do not have permissions "

Debugging a bit of .NET
Susan Bradley
writes "In our SBS world the addition of .NET 2.0 sometimes mangles our Remote Web Workplaces, Companywebs and what not... and the trick is to go into IIS, into the properties of the web sites and ensure that all the default SBS sites are on .net 1.1 and not 2.0...."
Using ISA to protect the SBS mail server just a smidge more....
Susan Bradley
writes "The recent closure of the Open Relay Database as reported by incidents.org points out how email and spam have changed over the years. Once upon a time Open Relays abounded and was the main way that spam attacks were launched. Now spam comes and attacks us from various ways from spam bots to NDR attacks. No longer is Open Relay our main SMTP security issue these days. In fact Exchange 2003 is not a mail relayer by default. Nevertheless, while our servers have gotten more secure, the spam impact is rising. As they've changed the playing field, we're using different tools to fight back...."
SBS CAL Activations Not Working
Vlad Mazek
writes "We’ve had several reports of SBS CAL activations failing. We’re currently looking in to the situation and will post an update here as soon as we have more information. This only affects CALs at this point, server and all other product activations are working properly. This one got me as well, so if you call to activate by phone you’ll experience the same issue...."

So the warning event occurred... last week?
Susan Bradley
writes "So you get this email every day.. but it's about an event that occurred on your serverthree days ago? So what's up with that? What's happening is that an event is getting 'stuck' in the performance logs files. So how can you fix this?"
Installing CRM on SBS
Susan Bradley
writes "There is a known issue that involves Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003 (Windows SBS) Release 2 (R2) and Microsoft Dynamics CRM 3.0 that prevents you from doing a ‘Standard’ installation of Microsoft Dynamics CRM. Follow the steps included in this download when you install Microsoft Dynamics CRM with Windows SBS R2."
Two Problems with new MAPS
Vlad Mazek
writes "Yesterday was the quarterly Microsoft Small Business Specialist webcast, packed with an updates on the program, new promotions and ideas. They really have made this thing phenomenally successful, far beyond anyones expectations. Let’s face it, if you want to be taken seriously you need to act it. Barrier to entry? Ok, sign up for the partner program and we’ll ship you a few DVD’s loaded with trialware. Pass a certification exam and Microsoft hooks you up with the full deck of their software to run your business off of. Do you really think a small business will go through the process of training, exams and certification just to get MAPS? Of course not. This benefits Microsoft a lot too because it documents, tracks and validates the partner as someone that is a little more than an email address and a PO Box. Will this happen? As long as someone at Microsoft is goaled on the number of partners in the channel this idea will only be a fantasy you read on Vladville."
Virtualization of SBS
Susan Bradley
writes "For those thinking of playing around with virtualization just a reminder that ISA is not supported in a virtual session. So while SQL is, ISA isn't.

She'll Bet You Haven't Done This...
Susan Bradley
writes "Invariably in newsgroups and listserves the question comes up "Can I cluster SBS?" and even more so now with Virtual Server and Virtualization the question comes up again...but it seems to me that everyone is looking for a technology issue to what I see is a people issue.
I don't think people are comfortable with the Disaster Recovery story of SBS because they haven't even tested out the recovery process of their own SBS box.
I'll bet you that most of you reading this blog haven't even...

Whither SBS?
Vlad Mazek
writes "...I sure hope someone at Microsoft is considering these factors. Just out of curiosity, how much more would it have cost to remove one chair from the floor and add 4 sq ft and a side panel for SBS? I’ll help you – $0, you had two empty spots. For what its worth, I understand why it was not there (don’t want to promote crippleware, business bundles, not a target SBS audience) but I can tell you that you had potential customers in the audience that you’ve chosen to ignore...
