They were already available in document libraries but with Windows SharePoint Services version 3.0, they are also available in lists: folders. A folder is more then just a container. Folders will allow extra segregation of content within a single list, adding more flexibility. You can assign metadata to a folder that will create a rich content holder that contains child content. This way a folder can function as a separate item type.
